I just got an early Christmas surprise. Five years ago, I was interviewed by Celia Hatton of CBS News about learning Chinese. At the time, I had been studying in Beijing for about three years. I never found out when the piece aired or if anything I said made into the final piece. Just last week I re-discovered the interview. It’s called “The Value of Learning Chinese” (alternate link)
A lot of things have changed since then: I had awesome facial hair and more hair on my head. But some things remain the same: I still believe that learning Chinese is not the impossible task so many believe it to be. My quote comes about 1:10 into video.
1.3 billion people can speak it, so it’s not rocket science. So it’s mostly a mental block…
… It’s a mental block that causes people to believe they can’t learn Chinese. I’ve said it before, and I’ll continue saying it: Anyone can learn chinese. All you need is time and motivation.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
